Hi! People keep telling me I should read Pokemon Special, and this morning while on a conference call I tried to find it on ebay. There are like a dozen different things called Pokemon Adventures (apparently what it's called in English?) with different covers and since manga is expensive I don't want to buy the wrong thing. Is this what I want? ...also is there anywhere to get them cheaper because oh god. :/ Thanks!

Also I've been thinking about timelines and history and the interaction of effects in Kanto/Johto on Unova pre-games and so on. Is there a good timeline of how these things fit together out there? I found this one on Bulbapedia and there is some good material in there but there's also stuff in there that feels really... unspecific. Like, how much time is there between HGSS and BLW? Are DPPt really happening at the same exact time? How could they not be influencing each other? How much time passes in the individual games? I imagine them taking a couple of years... is that wrong? Have other people done all of this work? I mean, I suspect what I put in my timeline will diverge a little bit in places, but I want to mostly fit canon and to have a good idea of how all of these things affect each other... particularly because a bunch of the stories I want to write are set well after all the games.

Hope you all are doing well!

Those Pokemon Adventures manga look real enough. It's Mato-era ones too.

It's hard to know how long between HGSS and BW, but we know that BW must be after HGSS as the Rocket Grunt who had trouble speaking Japanese was found in Unova speaking perfect English and with wife and son. Now, how big is that son? We know that it takes at least 8 months for a child to be made and it's hard to believe that as soon as he returns to Unova he gets a woman pregnant and has a wedding. He must have enough time to get know the woman and get her pregnant. Can the son talk already? I can't check now because the copy of Pokemon White I have access to is not in Winter, making the house inaccessible. If the son is old enough to talk, then years must be gone between HGSS and BW. If the son is old enough to talk, but is not a trainer yet, it should be equal to or less than 10 years as trainers get their permit at 10 and it takes at least one year for the child to be born.

Yes, DPPt is happening in the latter part of HGSS because of the Red Gyarados incident. Assuming that the broadcast was live or at least fast enough (say 2-3 days around the incident), Dawn/Lucas/Barry became trainers after Silver/Lyra/Ethan, shortly after the Lake of Rage incident, and before the Johto trainers arrive at the Johto League.

To sum it up, Dawn/Barry/Lucas are about the same age as Silver/Lyra/Ethan and beside the first few months of HGSS, their adventure time overlap. BW is set some years after HGSS and DPPt.

The Unovian trainers (Hilbert/Hilda/etc.) get their Pokemon later in their age compared to the Japan trainers. I'm not sure if the game gave an age, but in Pokemon Special Black is 14 instead of 10 like the other dexHolders. N looks older than Black/Hilbert.

Assuming the son of TR grunt is 3 year-old. BW would be about 4 years after the end of HGSS. Assuming that Silver was 12 at the end of HGSS (this is gameverse, as in specialverse Silver and Gold were already 16 at the end of HGSS arc). Assuming that the events of BW takes one year. 12+4+1=16 is Silver's age. 14+1=15 is Hilbert's age. Not that much younger.

We really need that son's age.

Wait, I forgot the +1 in Silver's age. It's 17 in my hypothetical timeline assignment.

...I just read PokeSpe on the internet, so I couldn't really help you there. Best of luck, though? :x

It's weird...I assumed that the reason it's said Gen I/III is because both of them (I remakes & III) are on GBA; and Gen II/IV (remakes/original) are on the DS. Not because it's supposed to be assumed that those happened at the same time. I think someone in Kanto would notice if suddenly the ocean started drying up a la Gen III or something.

My pokétimeline is like this:

Gen I
Three years later - Gen II
Four years later - III and IV (that was a hard year for the pokemon world)
Five years later - Gen V

I don't quite remember where those numbers are from, but I'm 90% sure the Gen I, II, and V numbers are from canon and I didn't just make them up.

I imagine each game taking a year tops, usually less. Eight months? A month per gym? I haven't really thought about it that hard (but I could imagine Red taking out Team Rocket in eight months).

Here's one date confirmation:
Gen II - "Heading south towards Azalea Town by way of Route 32 and Union Cave, the player meets up with the villainous Team Rocket, formed again after it was disbanded three years prior in the neighboring Kanto region by a young Trainer." (link)

But this gives me a headache:
"Details in the Hoenn- and Kanto-based games hint that the storyline of Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald is contemporaneous with that of FireRed and LeafGreen (and due to this, contemporaneous with Generation I as well), placing Generation III three years before Generation II and Generation IV, themselves contemporaneous." (source)

And I can't figure out where I got my "five years later" info for Gen V now - it could be that the gen number + 15-year-old protags threw me off. :/

So I guess I was wrong. :/ it could of course just be that the creators weren't thinking about the implications when they put all the games at the same time...
