Maybe it's a bit egotistical to say so, but I'd love to see you write more about it! I find it so interesting to see where our ideas intersect and where they're completely different. And the Hiker does interest me, especially since you brought up the whole cloning idea. I've actually never seen someone bring that up in a fic, which is weird because, like you said, it's so common in real life!
tldr; I'd love to see more if you do decide to write more.
For some reason, when I'm writing fanfiction I almost always slip into the present tense. It doesn't happen when I'm working on my original work, so I'm not sure why it happens in fanfiction. Still, that was actually one of the few stories where I actively decided to use present tense instead of automatically slipping into it-- I originally tried it out in the past tense, since I've been trying to write more in that tense, but I realized pretty soon that it did work better with the present tense. It makes me pretty glad that you think so too! I thought you also did pretty well with it, actually, especially considering you're not used to writing in that tense.
Also, I don't know if you'd be interested, but your posting up your commentary reminded me about the commentary that I had been planning to write for it. I posted it here (http://community.livejournal.com/rainingstarfish/11048.html), if you're interested. I won't be upset if you're not, though-- it is ridiculously long and I ramble on quite a bit. I just thought that you might be interested.
